Questioning paternity declarations

Finding yourself named as the father of a child can be overwhelming. However, if you believe that you are not the biological father, you do have options under Florida law. Michelle A. Barry PA understands that mistakes can occur and our staff helps men understand what their rights are. The first thing we explain is that you can petition the circuit court to disestablish your paternity.

What is the process of analyzing DNA?

DNA testing is often mentioned when cases of potential paternity fraud are under investigation. However, many people do not know what DNA testing entails or how it can be used to determine whether or not a child is biologically related to their father.

How can I request paternity testing in Florida?

If you are either unsure of whom your child’s father is or need to establish paternity for another reason, Florida gives you a number of options. According to the Florida Department of Revenue, you have five methods of securing paternal identity, which are the following:

Pacers' star seeking sole custody

An All-Star basketball player is petitioning a court for sole custody of a child of a New York woman. If a new paternity test determines that Indiana Pacer Paul George is the father, he is asking for the trial to be moved to Florida, where George and the woman met. His petition is being delayed until the decision regarding jurisdiction is decided.

Jason Patric child custody case raises larger issues about dads

Actor Jason Patric is fighting for custody of his son Gus, but the case is bringing to light some greater concerns about fathers. Gus was conceived through in vitro fertilization and, according to his mother, Patric did not indicate he wanted paternity rights. Yet, Patric claims that as the biological father he has rights. Courts have so far denied Patric's requests, opening a debate about what makes someone a father, a topic of interest to many in Florida.

Paternity suit filed against NBA player

A 24-year-old Miami woman has filed an action against Indiana Pacers NBA star, Paul George. In the action, the woman seeks to establish George's paternity and child support obligations for a child born in May 2013. The suit was filed in the Manhattan Family Court.

The family law implications of 'three-parent babies'

The venerable folk musician Bob Dylan famously quipped that “the times, they are a-changing.” Human knowledge continues to advance at a dizzying pace, and scientific progress regularly forces us to ask fundamental questions about what it means to be born and to be human.

Paternity test reveals girl's father is not biologically related

A growing number of couples are relying on non-traditional insemination and fertilization methods to have children. This sometimes means that the child or children they have may not share DNA with both parents.
